October Meeting - Needle A Little Knowledge?

Our October meeting took a different direction from originally planned, but that is okay, as we have back up ideas planned!

Rosemary started our meeting reminding us of our mission Statement: "Be kind! Be Inclusive. Keep it Simple. Be determined. Be who you want to be and learn from each other."

Welcome: Welcome 3 new ladies to our group: Catherine, Kathy and Laura. (Our apologies for the misspelling.) We are excited to have you and hope to see you again!

Presentation/Demonstration Sign UpAs this month's meeting change gave us an idea to have back up plans prepared as life does happen and things do come up.

A paper was passed around for members to sign up to teach a 15 min demonstration or a more detailed hour-long class. The goal is to have everyone share something they’ve learned or want to learn and share it with the rest of us.

It was suggested that we prepare our 15 minute presentation now so that if we need someone on short notice we would be able to have someone fill in.

A lively discussion ensued expressing different ideas. One topic of interest is how to do embroidery embellishments including different embroidery stitches.

Co-Chairman: Our co-chairman is leaving the group due to scheduling issues, etc. so Rosemary has talked to Sherry Sarino and she is willing to help in this capacity. All members that were there gave their approval. Thank you Sherry for filling this spot.

Sewing Machine Needle Demonstration:
Rosemary gave a great lesson on the “anatomy” of a sewing machine needle and all the different sizes and options available for different types of sewing. We got a resource book from Schmetz needles. Good needles and the right needle can make a big difference in your sewing.

We handed out these pocket guides, there are still plenty left if you didn't make it to the meeting this month and want one.

Rock Embellishments: We had a fun surprise from Lynne Greenleaf. She tried the rock embellishments from the February/March edition of the Quilting Arts magazine and showed us some of her fun masterpieces. She will be demonstrating this fun way to create next month.

Pantone Color App:
We then broke up into groups and had some hands-on time learning about the color apps:You can download the app and explore the possibilities. As a reminder: If you are using an iPhone, the app is ‘Pantone Studio’ (Free - additional tools not free). If you have an Android phone, the app is ‘Color Grab’ (free - app purchases). Another great app to use is called 'Adobe Capture' (Free). Those who have used it find the app to be extremely helpful in understanding colors in a particular photo. There are many options out there and the best thing to do is download and play around.

Money Jar:
More discussion on the money jar. Most agree that that a small stipend would be nice for teachers outside of SUFA that come in and teach.

Let’s make a final decision, ladies!

October Show and Tell
Annette Williamson showed us a small fabric picture using the concept of positive/negative space.

Melanie Wilson – a machine appliqued and long-arm quilted quilt
